CARLISLE a 2000 year old city with two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and one World Heritage Site. www.discovercarlisle.co.uk

Carlisle Castle www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/carlisle-castle/

Standing proud in the city it has dominated for nine centuries, Carlisle Castle remained a working fortress until well within living memory. It has withstood many sieges, held captive a royal prisoner, and been home to the King's Own Royal Border Regiment.

Explore the medieval castle rooms, discover a turbulent history with the exhibition, and walk some of the castle walls. We're also home to Cumbria's Museum of Military Life.

Carlisle Cathedral www.carlislecathedral.org.uk

Carlisle Cathedral has a long and turbulent history. It started life as a Norman Priory Church in 1122, becoming a cathedral in 1133. Notable features include figurative stone carving, wonky Norman arches, a set of medieval choir stalls and the largest window in the 'flowing decorated Gothic' style in England.

The cathedral is open daily for peace, quiet, prayer and reflection. Whether you are of this faith, another faith or no faith at all, we would be delighted if you chose our building as an oasis in a noisy world.

Talkin Tarn is a kettle-hole lake formed by the immense force of glaciers 18,000 years ago. Moving ice scoured and carved the landscape leaving glacial sand hills and a natural bowl, which filled with water as the ice sheet melted. The Tarn has long and rich history and has traditionally been used for recreation since at least the middle of the 1800's. The same is still true today with visitors coming from far and wide to enjoy all that the tarn has to offer.
